A tamper-evident flight recorder for your Mac.

Short — 40 words

Signata records every physical event on your Mac while you're away — wake, unlock, USB, volumes, displays — into a hash-chained local log whose integrity anyone can verify. Local-first, no account, no telemetry. It complements Find My rather than replacing it.

Longer — 110 words

Signata is a local-first menu bar utility for macOS that answers a question Find My cannot: what happened to a Mac that never moved? Arm it before leaving a machine in a hotel room, a shared office or a conference hall, and it records wake, sleep, screen lock and unlock, USB devices, mounted volumes, display changes and audio output into a normalized timeline. Each entry is hash-linked to the one before it, so editing, deleting or reordering history is detectable — and the log format is published with a standalone verifier, so the integrity claim can be checked without running Signata. Optional camera and screenshot capture is off by default. There is no account, no backend and no telemetry.

The name

Brand

The mark is a flat baseline broken by a single spike, inside a guard — "nothing, nothing, nothing, then something." Please don't recolour it, rotate it, add a gradient, or place it on a busy photograph. It needs a flat ground and about a quarter of its own height as clear space.

Things commonly gotten wrong

Not corrections aimed at anyone — just the four that come up most, and the four that would embarrass us most if printed:

• It is not a Find My replacement. Find My locates a Mac that's gone. Signata records what happened to one that stayed put. Signata has no location code at all and never asks for location permission.
• It does not detect failed password attempts. macOS exposes no sandbox-safe public API for that. Signata records lock, unlock and session activation instead.
• It is not anti-theft software and cannot lock, wipe or track a Mac.
• It is not "blockchain". A hash chain is a forty-year-old construction: each record stores a hash of the one before it. There is no ledger, no network, no token, and nothing distributed.

Claims we'd rather you didn't make

Signata's positioning depends on not overstating what it does, and a generous review can do more damage than a critical one if it promises something the product refuses to promise. Please avoid:

• "Protects your Mac" or "stops intruders." Signata prevents nothing. It records.
• "Unhackable", "military-grade", "impossible to tamper with." The chain protects history but not the newest entry, and someone who understands the format and has time on the machine can rebuild it. That's documented on the home page.
• "Catches thieves." With the lid closed a camera sees nothing, and pulling the drive defeats the whole thing.
• "Monitoring" or "surveillance" software. Signata records physical events on your own machine, with capture off by default and never remotely triggered.

The Limitations section on the home page is deliberately prominent and is a fair thing to quote. We'd rather be described accurately than favourably.

Why it exists

You leave a laptop in a hotel room. You come back and it's exactly where you left it, lid closed, apparently untouched. There is no way to know whether that's true — and the tools that exist answer a different question. Find My tells you where a Mac is, which you already know. Objective-See's DoNotDisturb tells you a MacBook lid was opened, which is the right signal on the right hardware but only one signal, and only on laptops.

Signata was built for the gap: a record of everything physical that happened, on any Mac including desktops, that you can still trust when you read it a week later. Which is why the log is hash-chained and why the format and verifier are published — an integrity claim that can only be checked by the program making it isn't a claim anyone should accept.
